Protecting your vehicle from the elements is a smart move, but property owners often face a key decision: should you build a carport or a full garage? Both options offer protection, but they differ significantly in cost, functionality, and construction time.

A carport is essentially a roof supported by posts, designed to cover a vehicle. Its main advantages are cost and simplicity. Carports are significantly less expensive to build than garages because they require fewer materials and less labor. They can often be erected in just a day or two. They provide excellent protection from sun, rain, hail, and snow, preventing damage to your vehicle's finish. Their open-sided design also means they don't trap fumes and can be used as a versatile, covered outdoor space for recreation.

A garage, on the other hand, is a fully enclosed structure with walls and a door. The primary benefit of a garage is security. It provides a locked space to protect your vehicles and other stored items from theft and vandalism. A garage also offers more complete protection from wind and blowing snow. Furthermore, it can serve as a workshop or be converted into additional living space. However, this functionality comes at a much higher cost—often three to four times that of a carport—and a more complex and lengthy construction process. The right choice depends on your budget, security needs, and how you plan to use the space.
